Hi, I'm Kellie Ehlers and I am a Reading Recovery and Reading Intervention teacher at Evening Street Elementary School in the Worthington City School District. Previous to attaining Reading Recovery training, I had reading validation certification, and taught third grade reaching an average of 25 students a year. Now that I teach Reading Recovery, I can reach so many more!

Currently, I am responsible for 505 students in my elementary school. I over-see all reading progress. My main responsibilities include teaching Reading Recovery, reading improvement small groups, test preparation groups, serving on our Intervention Assistance Core Team, organizing, implementing, training staff and volunteers, and writing lesson plans for Project MORE.

I teach an average of 8 to 9 first grade Reading Recovery students. My guided reading small groups consist of 10 to 15 first graders, 8 to 10 second graders, and flexible groupings for test preparation reaching as many as 15 to 25 students in grades three and four. I am available to teach test preparation groups in any grade with the highest need determined by my principal and me. In addition to these groups, I am used as a consultant and reading coach for the teachers in my building in kindergarten through sixth grade. Upon request, I go into classrooms to assist teachers by modeling guided reading groups for a week at a time reaching 25 children.

Reading Recovery enables me to reach many more students than a typical reading teacher would be able to reach because of Reading Recovery's advanced researched-based approach and continual on-going research. Reading Recovery has done all of this for me so I can reach so many. Because my district invested in Reading Recovery, we can continually "pay it forward". Now that is what I call cost savings!

Hi! I'm Laura Bain, and I am the Reading Recovery teacher at Buckeye Valley East Elementary in Ashley, OH. In the mornings, I teach Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies in a regular ed. classroom. This allows us to have a smaller class size for our students during Language Arts instruction. I started with these 16 students in First Grade last year, and looped to Second Grade with them this year. In the afternoons, I teach four Reading Recovery students a day.

My Reading Recovery training helped me get all of my First Graders off to a strong start in literacy, and strengthened my professional collaboration with the other First-Grade Teachers. I also serve on the building Literacy Team, the Leadership Team, and district planning and professional development committees.

By the end of the year I will have taught 24 students in my combined Classroom Reading Recovery teacher roles.

Hello, I'm Cathy Kint and I am currently a Reading Recovery teacher and Reading Specialist in Circleville City Schools. I have been a teacher for 13 years and a Reading Recovery teacher for 12 years. As a Reading Recovery teacher I teach about 9 students a year and as a Specialist I work with around 22 second graders in small groups of two students each. In the past I have also been a classroom teacher/Reading Recovery teacher in both first and second grade. I have been able to serve about the same number of students in both roles.

Our district qualifies its Reading Recovery teachers as the top tier in the RTI model providing one-on-one or two-on-one intervention. We also have other specialists who work with students in groups of 3 or 4. I have also served as Literacy Coordinator/Reading Recovery teacher in the past. I traveled to other buildings to work with at-risk students (about 25 per year) and maintained my 8-9 Reading Recovery students.

In addition to the above mentioned roles I also serve as a district consultant for ESL students. I do this during early morning hours in the middle and high school when my students haven't arrived yet at the elementary. I also meet with ESL students in my building prior to the beginning of the school day.

Hi! My name is Karen Bentley and I’m the Reading Recovery teacher and Literacy Coordinator at Buckeye Woods Elementary School, a school of 800+ students, in the South-Western City School District near Columbus, Ohio.

The first twenty years of my teaching career were spent as a classroom teacher of first, second, and fifth graders. During the 2001-2002 school year, I trained at The Ohio State University as a Literacy Coordinator. The school where I was teaching at the time, North Franklin Elementary, had about 300 students, many who were economically disadvantaged and English as a Second Language students. I co-taught the literacy block with a different primary teacher each year. While at North Franklin, I trained as a Reading Recovery teacher. This training provided the in-depth, fine-tuning that my literacy instruction and coaching needed. In my current assignment, I teach Reading Recovery students during half of the day and coach teachers and students the other half of the day.

Becoming a Reading Recovery teacher has increased my skills as a literacy coach in many ways. I am better equipped to listen to struggling readers and pin-point specific interventions that classroom teachers can provide for these students. I support classroom teachers by helping them design, implement, and monitor the success of Tier II interventions as an essential component of the RTI process. As the Literacy Coordinator, I rely heavily on my training as a Reading Recovery teacher to teach our staff about reading and writing, and how to help students use a variety of strategic actions to comprehend texts. Having someone in the building with Reading Recovery training is an invaluable resource for students, teachers, the principal, and parents.

Hello, my name is Sarah Hoepf and I am a Literacy Collaborative Coordinator and Reading Recovery teacher. Before becoming a LC Coach I taught first grade and also a first/second combination. As a classroom teacher, I taught 26 students each year. In my current role, I coach 14 teachers (who teach a combined total of 314 students in our elementary school). We focus on using assessment data to plan instruction and meet individual students' learning needs. In Reading Recovery, I work with 8-12 first grade students each year. The classroom/ intervention/ coach connection helps us to work together for the success of all our children.

Hi! I am Kim Reynolds and I am a Reading Recovery Teacher in Dublin City Schools. Before becoming a Reading Recovery Teacher, I taught first grade in Dublin for ten years. I typically had 18-20 students in my class. Now, I teach four Reading Recovery students. I also teach Early Literacy Initiative (ELI) for one hour at lunch. Through this program I have the opportunity to work with 6-8 kindergarten students on specific literacy activities, so that they can develop the skills and strategies to become independent in their kindergarten classrooms. I also teach Reading Support where I am able to support students in grades 1-5 through flexible grouping. In this role, I work with an average of 17 students by providing explicit literacy instruction within an authentic learning environment to promote independence in the classroom.

Hi, I'm Jodie Washek and I am a primary literacy coordinator and Reading Recovery teacher. Before being trained in Reading Recovery, I worked with 25 students in small groups along with being a literacy coach. With the dual role I have now, I work with students and teachers in grades K-2 in many different aspects of the Literacy Collaborative framework. In Reading Recovery, which involves about half of my school day, I work with 8-10 students annually.
